The month of March is annually recognized as National Nutrition Month. The theme for 2015 is “Bite Into a Healthy Lifestyle”. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics is encouraging “everyone to adopt eating and physical activity plans focused on consuming fewer calories, making informed food choices and getting daily exercise in order to achieve and maintain a healthy weight, reduce the risk of chronic disease and promote overall health”.

At Barre Co., we believe in creating a healthier lifestyle as a whole rather than dieting to achieve a particular goal. We’ve all heard of “yo-yo diets” which essentially includes any short-term diet that is not effective in the long run. These yo-yo diets are unhealthy as they may produce quick results without any overall health benefits considering the weight will return as soon as the diet ceases. A lifestyle change may be more difficult in the beginning, but will offer better long-term benefits. Although everyone has their own opinions on what it means to be healthy, there are some things nearly everyone can agree on. We are all aware that added sugar may as well be the little red guy sitting on your shoulder and that just because a soda is “diet” doesn’t mean it’s good for you. Take the knowledge you have and find a plan that works for you.

When it comes to the effects of diet and exercise on a healthy lifestyle, you want to create a plan that is feasible for you. Don’t set unattainable goals. Allow yourself a little wiggle room. Think of health and wellness as 80/20. We see the 80/20 Rule applied to several other scenarios and it always seems to end in a positive outcome. A healthy lifestyle is 80% diet and 20% exercise. Now that’s not to say that exercise is not important. Think of your body as a car with diet being the engine and exercise as the turbocharger. Without a healthy diet plan, your efforts at the gym may not produce the expected results. Barre Co. can help you find the best fit when it comes to cleaning up your diet. Everyone will respond to something different and we are here to help you find your niche.

When finding an exercise plan that works for you, be sure you mix up your workouts to keep your body from adapting. Avoid the plateau effect by coming to Barre Co. for a membership or package. Our program offers a variety of classes to meet all your fitness needs and wants. In less than an hour, clients have burned anywhere from 500-700 calories. We offer a variety of classes throughout the week so that you can choose your favorite or mix it up. If you go to a regular gym, it can be difficult to burn 500+ calories in an hour. At Barre Co., our Barre class is comprised of short, no impact sprints with stretching after each section to create interval type training. Cardio Burn class acts as a 45-minute sprint of fast paced moves to get the heart rate up followed by 10 minutes of necessary stretch and cool down. Our Barre Carve will tighten and tone every muscle in the lower body with a unique double resistance tube in only 30 minutes. Stix utilizes a long resistance strap with an individual barre attachment to amp up your barre workout by getting the heart rate up and adding intense core work.

At Barre Co., we are dedicated to your overall health and wellness. We want to help you not only create goals but also achieve them. Take some time for yourself this month and look into your diet and exercise goals. Where do you want to be in 6 months? What kind of changes do you need to make to build a stronger, healthier you? After a little research and some planning, you may just be ready to take a nice, hearty bite of health and wellness soup.
